Hiking in Tuscany – Geothermic area of Monterotondo Marittimo
The Geothermic area of Monterotondo Marittimo is a geo-naturalistic hiking in the central part of Tuscany. The complete ring route is about 8 Km and needs 4 hours at least, without considering time for lunch or other rests. But there is the possibility to do a shorter trail of about 3 hours in order to allow the group to have the afternoon free for wine tasting, museum visits or other extras.
How is the trail
The trail begin with a short but a bit steep rise. We are immediately surrounded by fumaroles, boiling water puddles, emissions of steam and sulphuric gas. The group will be catapulted in a very uncommon world made of red nude soil, white clouds of steam and green trees of oaks, pines and bushes. Almost all Tuscany had been interest by volcanic and tectonic phenomenons during the last 8 millions of years.
All around the geothermic power has been picked up with tubes and power plants. But not here. Here this natural emissions are free to flow in the atmosphere giving the landscape a very particular aspect.
What you must to know
Usually the sulphuric gas and acid steam do not produce any consequence on the people during the trail. The concentrations of toxic components are very low and the trail is in the open air. But some person with respiratory diseases or general heal problems could have some crisis here and we don’t want it happen. For this reason we tell this. Normal people, with good heal state, can just smell the particular scent of the steams without any other feeling.
The last part of the trail
The last part of the trail is in an old chestnut woodland completely different from the “hell” of the first part. A fresh and shadowy environment lead us to the starting point. After this nice and easy descent the group can visit the old small village of Sasso Pisano.
Lunch and extras
Usually groups prefer to eat during the trail their packed lunch, but we can arrange the guided tour in time for a lunch to a restaurant. After lunch the group have many possibility for the afternoon. Staying on the same geothermic subject the group could visit the Geothermal Museum in Larderello. If you want to completely change subject many farm can serve wine tasting, typical product and food tasting.
